Wardrobe Guide

THE AGE-OLD QUESTION ANSWERED

By far the most common question I get regarding Couple Shoots is, "What should we wear?" While there's absolutely no right or wrong (you do you, boo), I can definitely give you some pointers—both practical and stylistic. Hope it helps!

01

02

style principles—No.1

Aesthetics

Consider your environment

Go for natural, earthy tones

If your photoshoot is at the beach, avoid winter coats. Maybe wear creams, whites or blues rather than browns and blacks. You catch my drift.

If you can, go for earthy tones that will blend into the natural environment. Think creams, browns, soft greens and blues, white or black. Nothing too bright or saturated.

03

04

Complement, don't clash

Avoid too many patterns

Wear clothes that are similar in colour and style to your partner. You don’t have to be “matchy matchy” per se, but picking up subtle details from each others’ outfits can be a nice touch.

It’s best to wear simple, block colours. Avoid garish or distracting patterns, unless you really love them. We want to witness your love story, not your 70s bell-bottom pants.

Practicality

What is the weather forecast?

What will your environment be like?

If it’s windy, bring a jacket, maybe avoid skirts. If it’ll be hot and humid, wear summer-friendly attire.

If your photoshoot is planned for a bushland area, avoid wearing thongs. In contrast, thongs are fine at the beach—as are loose pants that can be rolled up in the waves.

03

04

Heels are almost always a bad idea

Avoid tight or impractical clothing

I know heels might look great, but I’ve never been in a situation where they’ve made for a good time. I like to mix-up the locations as much as possible during shoots, so it’s best to wear something you can walk in easily.

We might find ourselves laughing, dancing, skipping, climbing, exploring. For the best photos, wear clothes that won’t restrict your movement too much.

Essence

Is it what you'd normally wear?

Keep it casual

Ask yourself, “does this reflect my usual style and wardrobe?” The best photos happen when you can be your authentic self, instead of pretending to be someone else.

If in doubt, it’s best to downplay your outfits. You want clothes that will enhance your appearance, not overwhelm or distract from it. If you want a dress code, go casual or smart casual.

03

04

Do you feel confident in it?

Is it timeless, or will it date quickly?

This is perhaps the most important thing. Wear clothes that make you feel confident. It will help you thrive in front of the camera, instead of feeling shy or insecure.

Engagement and couples photos are heirlooms that your grandkids can enjoy one day. Is your outfit a timeless representation of how you want to be remembered?

Considerations

Layers are both stylish and practical

What to do with your hair?

If the weather looks sketchy or if you’re in doubt, wear layers. It’s a great way to bring some variation to your photos, and it’s a practical choice.

In most situations, I recommend wearing your hair out. It brings great movement and interest to photos, and we want to see your natural beauty let loose!

03

04

Bring outfit variations if you must

Still feeling overwhelmed?

If you’re ultimately still unsure, you can bring a couple of different outfit options to our location and I can help you choose on the day.

Hit me up, send me photos, ask me questions. I’m always happy to help!
